Canton Network: What "Public" Means When Your Users Are Banks
In late February 2026, Canton sent three signals in under a month. An institutional oracle layer went live. A Tier-1 custody firm also took a governance seat. Meanwhile, a regulated Japanese exchange set a listing date for the network's token.
How Canton’s architecture defines “public”
Canton calls itself a public network. But anyone who's looked through the CIPs and governance announcements quickly notices: the "public" here is doing a lot of work that the word doesn't usually do in crypto.
The architecture runs on need-to-know distribution — validators don't maintain a globally replicated state, participants only receive data they're entitled to, data visibility is scoped by authorization. So when Canton says “public,” they mean shared rules and a settlement layer multiple parties can coordinate on. The economics are visible in aggregate — even if individual transactions stay private.
That framing creates a genuine question. What kind of ecosystem can form around a network where "open participation" is bounded by who gets approved?
Recent protocol changes in Canton
The best way to understand where Canton is heading is to look at what they shipped in the last few weeks.

CIP-0103 — a wallet and dApp interoperability standard modeled on Ethereum's EIP-1193, adapted to Canton's multi-domain privacy architecture. Networks write wallet standards when they expect more than a handful of custom integrations.

CIP-0104 — rewards shifted from activity markers to traffic-based measurement via sequencer and mediator data. The intent: incentives auditably tied to real network load.

Protocol Development Fund — launched February 2026, a programmatic reallocation of 5% of future CC emissions into a governed dev fund with quarterly budgeting, milestone payouts, and annual independent audit. Basically TradFi-style capital allocation, applied onchain.
And then there's the oracle layer. On February 25, 2026, Chainlink and Canton announced live deployment of Data Streams, SmartData feeds (NAV/AUM class feeds included), and Proof of Reserve, with CCIP planned for the near term. Regulated asset workflows are data workflows first — pricing, proof of reserves, collateral verification all have to work before anything else can settle.
Canton’s exposure to the repo market
Broadridge's Distributed Ledger Repo platform, running on Canton-connected infrastructure, processes over $8 trillion per month in repo. If that figure is directional, Canton underpins money-market flows that most blockchain projects don't even try to address.
The February 2026 working group update added a first cross-border intraday repo using tokenized Gilts, including a cross-currency variant against non-GBP tokenized deposits. Few crypto chains optimize for that format. This is ICMA territory.
Governance is getting heavier — deliberately
DTCC formally took a co-chair role in Canton's decentralized governance, alongside Euroclear. DTCC and Digital Asset separately set an H1 2026 target for a controlled production MVP — minting a subset of DTC-custodied U.S. Treasuries on Canton.

The SEC no-action letter to DTC (December 11, 2025) describes allowlisted wallets, compliance-aware protocols, and a three-year time scope. DTCC puts broader service rollout in H2 2026.
Honestly, that's the clearest signal of what Canton actually believes: institutions gain legitimacy through governance participation, not just through having institutional clients. Whether that makes "public" feel more like a standards body with heavyweight members than a grassroots ecosystem — maybe, but that's also what Canton seems to be optimizing for.
The core tension in Canton’s design
Canton describes itself as a public network with open participation and usage-linked economics. What the architecture builds toward: privacy by default, restricted data visibility, and governed validator roles.
Both things are true at once, which is what makes the project hard to categorize cleanly.
Canton has decided "public" and "institutional" can coexist — fine. But what kind of "public" do you actually get when privacy and governed access stay non-negotiable constraints, not optional add-ons?
We think that tension is load-bearing. Strip it out and Canton either ends up as a permissioned enterprise chain with a token on top, or a public chain that regulated institutions won't use because the transparency model doesn't work for them. So they keep threading that needle, governance decision by governance decision.
What clarifies the "public" question in practice
On economics: Canton has burned 2.4B CC as of early March 2026. Fees are USD-priced and fully burned, so the burn figure reflects real usage rather than token price dynamics — as long as the measurement pipeline stays credible.
On custody: Fireblocks announced Canton support in February 2026 with enterprise policy controls for settling assets, and the governance process approved Fireblocks as a Super Validator (CIP-0072, weight 5) — a different level of commitment than wallet integration.

On payroll: Canton's February 10, 2026 release describes a first real payroll run for a multinational using private stablecoins on Canton, enabled with Toku. Salary data is maybe the easiest way to explain why full transparency breaks real workflows.
On legibility: Canton published a MiCA-aligned sustainability dashboard (roughly 271,737 kWh annualized electricity, about 2.016 Wh per transaction), and Noves launched CCBrowser for human-readable Canton transaction analysis. "Public" here means credible enough for auditors, even without seeing the underlying flows.
What still has to prove itself
Can incentives stay fair when most activity is private? CIP-0104 anchors rewards to measurable traffic, but limited visibility makes third-party verification harder, and community discussion has flagged confusion around public metrics tooling.
The governance question is maybe trickier. DTCC co-chairing with Euroclear is a legitimacy signal and a signal of concentrated influence in the same breath. As decisions accumulate — validators, rewards, funding — the question is whether Canton behaves like a neutral standard-setting body or a consortium that optimizes for incumbent comfort.
Does controlled production actually scale? The SEC letter and DTCC's timeline are guardrail-heavy and time-scoped. Minting tokenized Treasuries is the easier half — whether those assets circulate as collateral primitives across systems that weren't designed together is the harder one.

Canton's current stage is a live test of whether "public" means something coherent when the constraints are institutional. The next phase depends on whether that holds as governance, standards, and retail access all expand at once — and whether the measurement layer gets credible enough for outsiders to trust the economics without seeing the flows.
